This Week's New Tenders (25 New)
Qld ups the ante in ICT skills debate with $500,000 grant
The Queensland government has pledged nearly $500,000 over two years to counter what it sees as an ongoing ICT skills shortage in the state which will continue to worsen if left unabated.
During his keynote address to open the National ICT Skills Summit in Brisbane yesterday, Queensland's IT Policy Minister Chris Cummins announced a $250,000 program to encourage an injection of talent into the ICT industry. The funding will go towards a new program to promote ICT as a viable career choice. The ICT Career Start program is part of the Beattie government's billion dollar skills plan to reform the state's vocational education and training sector, which includes 23 new skills formation strategies recently announced by the Minister for Employment, Training, Sport, and Industrial Relations, Tom Barton.
Comms bodies to merge
The two peak industry bodies of the Australian telecommunications community are in the final stages of negotiating to merge.
The move, announced this morning, will see the industry's self-regulatory body, the Australian Communications Industry Forum (ACIF), join forces with the Service Providers Association (SPAN). The combined entity will be called the "Communications Alliance" and be headed up by current ACIF chief executive officer Anne Hurley, who will retain the same title. Anne Hurley The merger still has to be put to the two groups' membership for final approval, with the two groups transitioning to a new structure by 1 September this year if the vote is positive.
Encouraging Entrepreneurship in the Australian ICT industry
In May 2006, the inaugural ‘Developing Business Skills for ICT Entrepreneurs’ program, celebrated the graduation of its first group of ICT professionals. The program assisted these ICT business entrepreneurs to gain and develop the key skills required to enable them to grow their businesses.
AIIA designed this unique and innovative course specifically for business owners and managers of established ICT companies who have the potential to expand their operations in the next five years. The program requires participants to attend three residential workshops over the course of a year. The workshops consist of coursework, class room discussion and case study sessions.
