POLICY AND ASSOCIATION NEWS
LAUNCH OF COLLABORATIVE ONLINE SECURITY INITIATIVE
The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Helen Coonan, today launched National E-Security Awareness Week, 23–27 October 2006, to encourage Internet users to ‘stay smart online’. “The Internet is increasingly part of our home and business lives, from banking and shopping, to communicating with family and friends,” Senator Coonan said. “We all need to think about security when we set up our computers and in our behaviour when online. National E-Security Awareness Week has activities and useful information about online security, for businesses and home users of all ages. “As part of National E-Security Awareness Week, I am delighted to launch a new website www.staysmartonline.gov.au, for Internet users. It has simple advice on how to secure computers, transact and interact safely online.
PUBLIC COMMENT SOUGHT ON THE .AU INTERNET DOMAIN
The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Helen Coonan, today called for public comment on a discussion paper released as part of a review of the .au Internet domain arrangements. “The current administrative arrangements for .au have been in place for more than five years. It is therefore appropriate for the Australian Government to undertake a broad examination of its existing structures,” Senator Coonan said.
VICTORIAN GIRLS URGED TO GO FOR IT
Girls looking for a fast paced, creative and leading edge career need look no further than the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry. ICT Minister Marsha Thomson said the Go Girl – Go For IT initiative starting at Deakin University today was aimed at making girls aware of the many work opportunities available through ICT.
NEW QUEENSLAND ICT STRATEGY A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION, SAYS AIIA
The Queensland Government’s recent decision to appoint Robert Schwarten to the position of Minister for Public Works, Housing and Information and Communication Technology of Queensland has been applauded by the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA). “Mr Schwarten is a senior respected minister and we look forward to his proven ability to make things happen,” says AIIA’s Queensland Branch Chairman, John Vickers. “This is formal acknowledgement of the importance of information and communication technology (ICT) to the Queensland economy.”
TAKE ACTION! SPYWARE COULD BE COSTING AUSTRALIAN BROADBAND USERS MONEY AND SPEED
The Internet Industry Association today warned broadband users that undetected spyware on their computers could be eating away at their download limits, possibly costing them excess bandwidth charges or slowing their connection speeds. In launching its GetNetSafe scheme, as part of national eSecurity week, free trial anti-spyware, anti-virus and anti-spam solutions are being made available to all Australian internet users courtesy of a number of the Association’s security vendor members.
AIIA AND CHUBB INSURANCE PARTNER TO OFFER ICT INDUSTRY INSURANCE DISCOUNTS
AIIA and Chubb Insurance Company of Australia (Chubb Insurance) have partnered to offer AIIA member companies a substantial discount on public and product liability and professional liability insurance, including low minimum premiums for start-up companies and coverage suitable for GITC insurance requirements. The announcement comes after the recent government decision to limit suppliers' liability when purchasing ICT goods and services.
