REALISING THE POTENTIAL OF THE LOCAL ICT INDUSTRY
The Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) recently conducted research to inform the development of a range of small-to-medium enterprise (SME) development programs.
Smaller companies in the information and communication technology (ICT) industry want entrepreneurial training, access to marketing intelligence and the opportunity to collaborate with other like-minded companies to win business, reveals a new research report into the potential of the local ICT industry. The recommendations that emerge from the research include the need to: * Build the capacity and capability of the Australian ICT industry, particularly through the development of high-level managerial and entrepreneurial competence, * Raise awareness of the importance of marketing and provide marketing intelligence, * Advocate the exciting range of career opportunities to potential ICT graduates, and * Promote the importance of the industry to the Australian public and Australian decision makers.

POSITIVE OUTLOOK FOR INDUSTRY AS ICT UNEMPLOYMENT DECLINES
The ACS (Australian Computer Society) recently released the results of its annual Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Employment Survey for 2006. The results indicate a positive employment outlook for ICT professionals, with ICT unemployment at its lowest level in many years at 5.1% - now only 0.3 percentage points higher than the ABS national average (4.8%).
QUEENSLAND APPOINTS NEW ICT MINISTER
The Queensland IT portfolio has been handed to the former energy and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Minister John Mickel in a cabinet reshuffle announced this week. Mickel, who now holds state development, employment and industrial relations, won the information technology portfolio from defeated small business and multicultural affairs minister Chris Cummins.
