‘Slaves’ of the email inbox hurt productivity

Many employees have become ‘slaves’ to their inbox and vast volumes of email are cutting into business productivity, according to the latest research by the Sydney Chamber of Commerce.

More than half the businesses surveyed for the research shared concerns about email volumes, the demands they placed on the time of their employees and the resultant impact on productivity. The survey also revealed that one in five businesses estimated staff were spending four or more hours a week, outside office hours, answering work-related emails. This means employees in these businesses are effectively spending an extra day a fortnight on emails.
