COONAN - MINISTER WELCOMES NATIONAL 3G NETWORK INVESTMENT
The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Helen Coonan, today welcomed the announcement by Optus that it would invest up to $800 million to boost the capabilities of its 3G mobile communications network. “This is great news for Australian consumers – particularly those in rural, regional and remote areas – who will soon reap the benefits of a more competitive 3G market,” Senator Coonan said.
BALDWIN - IP'S ECONOMIC VALUE HIGHLIGHTED AT APEC SYMPOSIUM
The importance of a robust intellectual property (IP) rights system to the Australian economy has been highlighted by the Hon Bob Baldwin MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Industry, Tourism and Resources. Speaking today on the first day of the Trading Ideas Symposium in Sydney, the first pubic-private sector event of APEC 2007, Mr Baldwin said IP was a key driver of the knowledge economy and an essential component for the Australia’s future economic strength.
QLD STATE - INNOVATORS TO SHARE UP TO $18 MILLION
Premier Peter Beattie is urging scientists and research organisations to apply for grants in the latest round of up to $18 million in Queensland Government Smart State Innovation Funds. Inspecting the Australian Sun and Health Research Laboratory at QUT’s Kelvin Grove campus today – another example of the Smart State in action – Mr Beattie said the grants were helping push the boundaries of discovery.
ACS FOUNDATION EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR RECEIVES AUSTRALIA DAY HONOURS
The ACS (Australian Computer Society) congratulates ACS Foundation Executive Director, John Ridge, on being awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in this year’s Australia Day Honours. A former President, Vice President, NSW Branch Chairman, Marketing Board Director and Membership Lifecycle Board Director of the ACS, Mr Ridge received the honour for his service to the information technology industry – in particular through the promotion and development of professional organisations and the creation of educational opportunities.
